On Saturday, the Hanock girls basketball team traveled to NDSCS in Wahpeton to participate in their 15th annual Girls Basketball Bonanza. The Lady Owls were matched up against North Dakota powerhouse Fairmount-Campbell-Tintah and lost a hard fought battle by a score of 67-59.
Hancock came out strong in the opening half and led 28-24 at halftime. In the second half, F-C-T came storming back and it was a physical battle to the end.
Bree Holleman played another monster game for the Owls with 34 points, 7 steals and 6 rebounds, however, she fouled out of the game with 1:39 to play with Hancock trailing by just two points. F-C-T was able to convert on their free throws down the stretch, going 16-for-21 from the line in the game. The Owls only got to the line to shoot four free throws.
Jenny Noordmans finished the game with 19 points and 4 rebounds, while Hannah Newhouse scored 4 points and pulled down a team high 7 boards.
Sami Schmit led the scoring for F-C-T with 26 points, followed by Kali Luick with 14 points.
"We just played five games from last Saturday to this Saturday against some quality teams," commented Hancock Head Coach Jodi Holleman. "I did see some signs of fatigue in the second half when we tried to tighten the presses. We just need to continue to keep working hard and improving each week so that we are ready for playoffs."
The Owls will host Wheaton/Herman-Norcross on Tuesday in Pheasant Conference action.
