Crown College uses strong finish in win over Cougar men

By Brian Curtis

The Crown College Purple Storm used a 17-4 run over the final eight minutes of the game on Tuesday in a 66-53 win over the University of Minnesota, Morris in non-conference college menís basketball at St. Bonifacius, MN.

The game was close for the first 32 minutes before Crown began to pull away.

Crown took a six point lead with 8:48 to play in the first half, but UMM cut the lead to two, at 21-19, just a few minutes later with a pair of free throws from David Holler (So. Chanhassen, MN) and a jump shot by Adam Girtman (SO. Prior Lake, MN).

Over the final minutes of the first half the two teams traded baskets before the Purple Storm took a 29-23 lead into the locker room at the break.

The second half started the way the first half ended with Crown College maintaining a five to seven point lead most of the time.

Minnesota, Morris (1-6) was able to put together a 6-0 run after falling behind 49-43.

Free throws by Adam Girtman, and jump shots from Jon Lang (Jr. Melrose, MN) and David Holler brought the first tie of the game at 49-49 with 8:33 left in the game.

But that is when Crown took over the game and started to work the ball inside to get some easy baskets and they also capitalized on the Cougars cold shooting down the stretch. UMM found a lid on the basket missing 10 straight shots over a seven-minute period of the second half as Crown continued to build their lead.

After the Cougars had tied the game at 49, Minnesota, Morris did not score again until Leonard Matthias (Fr. Baudette, MN) converted a pair with 1:07 left in the game.

The Cougars had only one three-point basket in the game and were 1-12 from down town. Crown was 7-19 (37%) from three-point range for the game.

David Holler and Adam Girtman led the Cougars with 14 point each, Holler just missed his second straight double double with nine rebounds.

The Cougars will host the Eagles of Northwestern College on Saturday December 14 at 7:30 at the UMM P.E. Center.
