The driving force behind the Perham girl’s golf team’s recent success, Becca Huus announced on Monday that she will continue her career at the University of North Dakota next year. The Yellowjacket senior will be turning in her black and yellow golf bag for the green and white of the newly named ‘Fighting Hawks’.
“I like it better than Roughriders,” Huus said with a smile.
Huus has been a dominant force for the Lady Jackets over the past 3 seasons. She is the 2-time defending HOL Individual Champion, and has helped Perham to 3-straight Heart O’ Lakes Conference team titles. Last spring, she won the HOL title with a 38.86, 9-hole scoring average in conference meets. It was nearly 4 strokes better than the next best individual (42.43).
She has also made 3-straight trips to the Class AA State meet. As a freshman, she finished tied for 31st with a 27-hole (weather shortened) score of 128. In 2014, she was 21st with a 165, and last summer, she was tied for 22nd with a 166.
It was after her sophomore year that she began to realize golfing in college was a realistic goal.
“I began paying attention to scores and watched a lot of college golf and thought, ‘I can do this.’”
It’s nice to have a pair of Division-I schools practically in your back yard come calling, too.
“NDSU was recruiting me for a long time before UND started sending letters,” Huus said. She added her coach, Cory Solberg, helped start the process with his alma mater, UND.
“At 1st, I was really interested in NDSU,” Huus said. “Bethel (D-III in St. Paul, MN) was tempting and they wouldn’t give up. But once I visited UND, it felt like the better fit right away.”
She added that the academics were also a deciding factor. She was looking into business, but also science, particularly pre-optometry.
“NDSU did a good job recruiting me, but UND was a much better fit for me,” Huus said. “The NDSU coach (Matt Johnson) said he was disappointed, but he wished me good luck.”
On the other side of the spectrum is UND Head Coach Natalie Martinson. The 2008 UND grad is starting her 5th season as Head Coach.
"I am excited that Becca decided to continue her academic and athletic career at UND,” Martinson said. “She is a very strong student and has excelled in the classroom as well as on the golf course. I look forward to seeing what she will bring to UND when she joins the team in the Fall of 2016.”
Huus said she knows a lot of the golfers on the current UND roster, and said she is good friends with a couple and is very much looking forward to being teammates with them.
The UND roster includes Matty Tschider from Detroit Lakes, and a pair of golfers from Minnewaska Area, Alexis Guggisberg and Jenna Janu, who Huss competed against at State Meet’s. The Fighting Hawks will have 3 seniors graduating off this year’s squad before Huss joins them next fall.
“I’m glad to have the process over already,” Huss said. “I really wanted to sign early and not have to be thinking about it during the golf season. Now I can get the process started with stuff like housing and all that.”
