Mayville State uses strong second half in win over Cougar women

The Mayville State University Comets (4-0) shot a blistering 61% from the field in an 89-71 win over the University of Minnesota, Morris in non-conference women’s basketball at the UMM P.E. Center Saturday night.

Most of the first half belonged to the Cougars as they shot 43% from the field and had an early five-point lead at 9-4.

After taking a pair of six point leads, the first at 32-26 after a three-point basket by Danielle Mercurio (Fr. Bay Point, CA), the second at 34-28 on another three from Mercurio.

The Comets then went on a 6-0 run to close out the half and the teams headed to the locker room even at 34-34.

Mayville State would connect on 25 of 41 second half shots (61%) and out scored Minnesota, Morris (0-2) 55-37 in the second half in earning their fourth win in as many games to open the season.

The Cougars shot only 35% from the field in the second half.

After being out rebounded 59-34 against Martin Luther on Friday night, the Cougars faired better in the rebounding department Saturday, but Mayville State won the battle of the boards 44-35.

Malinda Berglund (Fr. Grand Marais, MN) had a career high 22 points and four assists.

For the Cougars Danielle Mercurio had her second straight game with 19 points and also tied a Minnesota, Morris record for three’s in a game with five. She joins six others who had five three pointers in a game, including current Cougar Stacy Nordgren (Jr. Buffalo, MN) who did it twice last year.
