After building up a 23-point lead just before halftime, Hillcrest Lutheran Academy had to withstand a furious comeback bid by the Ortonville Trojans.
The Comets managed to hold on for a 38-30 homecoming victory on Friday night in Fergus Falls.
Kyler Newman had a huge night for Hillcrest, rushing for 212 yards on 26 carries and scoring two touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 24 yards and a third score. Jacob Isaac completed 11-of-21 passes for 113 yards and a TD. Nathan Christenson (3-36-0) and Evan Malmstrom (4-32-0) led the Comet receivers.
Ortonville struck first, scoring on a one-yard run by Austin Haas and adding a two-point conversion pass from Travis Westlund to Colt Scofield. Hillcrest got on the board when Sean McGuire picked off a Westlund pass and took it in for a TD. Jordan Foss added the PAT and the Comets trailed 8-7.
Newman's first touchdown, a run of three yards, put the Comets ahead 14-8 after a PAT kick by Foss. Reggie Undseth scored on a two-yard run with 9:16 left in the half and Foss tacked on the extra-point, giving Hillcrest a 21-8 advantage. Isaac hit Newman with a 26-yard aerial strike and Foss made it 28-8 with 6:12 to play in the first half. Foss then booted a 33-yard field goal with 2:22 remaining in the first half, giving the Comets a 31-8 lead, which they held a halftime.
The Ortonville comeback started with a 13-yard TD run by Haas with 7:28 left in the third quarter. Westlund connected with Mason Kuechenmeister for the two-point conversion, cutting the lead to 31-16.
Newman went 32 yards for another touchdown for the Comets and Foss booted the extra point to make it a 38-16 game.
A pair of Westlund TD passes, the first to Robert Wood covering 17 yards and the second covering 52 yards to Riley Thompson. The Trojans got one two-point conversion run by Westlund, making the final score 38-30.
Ortonville outgained the Comets in total offense 459-339. The Trojans, however, lost three fumbles and had two passes picked off, while Hillcrest had only one turnover.
