Detroit Lakes boys win Class AA State Golf Championship

After tying for the State Championship in 2008, the Detroit Lakes boys golf team won the title outright this time around, as they took top honors at the Class AA State Tournament at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan this week.  The Lakers shot a 302 in Wednesday’s 1st round to sit in 2nd place, 3 strokes behind Marshall.  But Detroit Lakes shot a 304 on Day 2, compared to a 309 for Marshall, and they finished with a 606 to take the title.  Marshall did finish as the runner-up with a 608.

The Lakers had finished 5th last year at State.

“These guys kinda made their mind up last year that they were going to go for this and they worked very hard to get here,” Laker head coach Bob Gordon said.  “Our No. 1 and 2 guys (Karter Smith and Tanner Lane) were solid.  Our 3 and 4 guys struggled a little bit, but our 5 and 6 guys (Connor Hedstrom and Tyler Baukol) played very well.  It shows what kind of team we had all year.  We had six, even 8 guys who played very well for us.”

“We weren’t feeling to much pressure,” Smith said.  “We came in knowing Marshall had a 3-shot lead and we were a little under the radar.”

Smith finished in a tie for 2nd place individually with a 144 (72-72).  He shot identical rounds of 38-34 each day. Winning the Class AA individual title was Marshall’s Max Deutz, who shot a 143 (70-73).

“It feels pretty good (tying for 2nd individually),” Smith said.  “I’m happy for Max.  I played with him today and he’s a great golfer.”

Lane was the Lakers No. 2 golfer, shooting a 75 on Thursday to finish with a 149 overall, good for a tie for 11th place.  Michael Herzog shot an 81 on Thursday and had a 159 overall to finish tied for 42nd along with Hedstrom, who had a 80 on Thursday.  Baukol finished tied for 53rd with a 162 overall after shooting a 77 on Thursday.  Austin Rusness was tied for 62nd with a 165, shooting a 87 on Thursday.

D.L.’s Mid-State Conference rival, Staples-Motley, tied for 3rd place with defending champ Orono with a 610.  The top-notch conference competition is just part of what helped made the Lakers champions.

“Coach Gordon gets us in lot of good tournaments with a lot of good team’s,” Smith said.  “So he has to get a lot of credit on how he prepares us.”

Tournament Note:  Michael Strain of Staples-Motley, playing in the same group with D.L.’s Tanner Lane, hit the 1st Hole In One in boys State Tournament history.  He  aced the 154-yard 17th hole. Strain had chipped in on the 16th hole, and his back-nine score of 33 gave him a 72 for the day and a 147 total. That gave him a share of seventh place with Shattuck-St. Mary's sophomore Anthony Brodeur, son of NHL goaltender Martin Brodeur.  Staples-Motley finished in a tie for 3rd with Orono.

DL girls finish 2nd at State Golf Tournament

The Detroit Lakes girls golf team had a 1st place lead with a 329 after the 1st day of the Class AA State Golf Tournament at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan Wednesday.  And they shot an identical 329 on Day 2 on Thursday.  But it wasn’t enough to keep them in the lead as Red Wing put together a 2nd day score of 311 to finish the tournament with a 641 to win their 4th State Championship.  The Lady Lakers finished as the runner-ups with a 658.

Red Wing was the Class AA runner-ups last year, and they break a string of titles by Minnewaska Area, who finished in 3rd with a 670.  Minnewaska had won all 3 Class AA State Championships since golf moved to 3 classes in 2008.  Before that, Minnewaska had won 2-straight Class A titles going back to 2006, when Detroit Lakes won their girl’s State Championship.

Detroit Lakes has made 4 State appearances, and have brought home medals and a trophy with each previous trip to State, having finished in 3rd place twice (including last year) in addition to their 2006 title.

Senior Anna Laorr of Breck won the Class AA Individual Championship with a 2-day total of 147 (76-71).  Loarr was the top returning finisher from last year, having finished in 3rd place behind a pair of seniors from Minnewaska Area.  Detroit Lakes’ leading golfer was 7th grader Kate Smith, who finished in a tie for 5th place with a 159 (77-82).

Trisa Hutchinson was next for the Lady Lakers, shooting an 83 on Thursday (83-80) and finishing with a 164 for the tournament to finish in a tie for 14th along with Perham’s Holly Karkela.  Natalie Roth shot an 82 on Thursday for the Lady Lakers and had a 166 for the tournament to finish 17th.  Matty Tscheider also had an 82 on Thursday and finished in a tie for 19th place with a 169.  Courtney Hedstrom finished in 41st place with a 180 after shooting a 90 on Thursday, and Sydney Busker had a 100 on Thursday to finish with a 197 in a tie for 64th place.

Karkela, Huber finish PHS golf career's at State Tournament

A pair of Perham senior golfers ended their career’s at the Class AA State Golf Tournament at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan this week.  Although both Holly Karkela and Kaylan Huber had solid, steady rounds on Thursday, neither came home with medals.

Karkela finished in a tie for 14th place with a 2-day total of 164.  She had an 83 (41-42) in Thursday’s 2nd round after shooting an 81 (40-41) on Wednesday, that put her in a tie for 8th place after 18 holes.

“I struggled with all the parts of my game on Thursday, which was unfortunate, but it happens to everyone,” Karkela said.

Huber shot an 84 (43-41) on Thursday, giving her a 2-day total of 178 and a 38th place finish.

Last year at State, Karkela finished in 7th place with a 2-day total of 162 (81-81).  In 2009, she finished in a tie for 31st place with a 176 (89-87), and in 2007 as an 8th grader, Karkela finished 78th with a 218 (114-104).  Huber made her 1st trip to State last year and finished 55th with a 190 (90-100).

“I had very high expectations of myself because I did so well last year," Karkela said.  "I did not play as well as I would have liked, but I am happy that I made it to state my senior year and made the top 15. I am not sure that it has hit me that it is all over, but it will soon I am sure. I’m happy the way my high school career ended up and the 4 state tournaments I am very happy I qualified and got the opportunity to play. It was a great career and I am excited to start playing college golf in September."

Senior Anna Laorr of Breck won the Class AA Individual Championship with a 2-day total of 147 (76-71).  Loarr was the top returning finisher from last year, having finished in 3rd place behind a pair of seniors from Minnewaska Area.

Red Wing won the team championship with a 2-day total of 641, 17 strokes ahead of the runner-ups from Detroit Lakes (658).  The Lakers leading golfer was 7th grader Kate Smith, who finished in a tie for 5th place with a 159 (77-82).

Beau Hanson ties for 3rd at Class A State Golf; Hornets take 7th

Defending Class A State Champ Beau Hanson had a 2nd day score of 75 at the State Tournament at Pebble Creek Championship Course in Becker on Thursday, but it wasn’t quite enough for him to secure a 2nd State title.  Hanson finished with a 2-day total of 151 (42-34—76 / 37-38—75) to finish in a 5-way tie for 3rd place.

Taking the State Championship was senior Matt Chalberg of Trinity, who had a 36-hole score of 146, including an even-par 72 on Day 2.  Aaron Forgard, a senior from Faribault, finished 2nd with a 149.  Hanson finished in a tie with 2009 State Champ Dillon Schultz of Springfield, Zak Pendleton of Cedar Mountain, Grant Exsted of Isle and Sam Eisenhuth of BEST.

As a team, Frazee finished in 7th place overall with a 2-day total of 690.  They shot a 350 on the 1st day, followed by a 340 on Day 2.  The low score was due in large part to Zack Ziegler, who shaved 8 strokes off his 1st day total for an 80 on Day 2 after an 88 on Wednesday.  He finished in a tie for 30th place.  Josh Kertscher shot a 90 on the 2nd day and finished with a 179 overall, good for a tie for 58th place.  Travis Gray had a 95 Thursday to finish in a tie for 75th with a 192.  Trevor Stilke had a 99 Thursday and a 198 for the tournament to tie for 78th, and Isaac Schermerhorn had a 109 Thursday and a 220 for the tournament to tie for 86th.

Springfield won their 1st State Championship, shooting a 323 on the 1st day, followed by a 321 on Day 2 for a 36-hole total of 644, 9 strokes ahead of Providence Academy.  Springfield finished in 3rd place last year.

Perham boys struggle in 2nd day at State Golf Tournament

A rough front-9 took Perham’s Dan Cavanagh out of title contention Thursday at the 2nd day of the Class AA State Golf Tournament at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan. Cavanagh shot a 71 (34-37) on Wednesday to finish the 1st 18 holes in 2nd place, 1-stroke behind leader Max Deutz of Marshall (35-35—70).  But the Yellowjacket junior, in his 4th State Tournament, shot a 44 on the front-9 in Thursday’s 2nd round, and finished with an 83, giving him a 2-day total of 154 to put him in a tie for 28th place.

“Well I started off bad, and when I got it back, I couldn’t hold on to it and would bogey,” Cavanagh said. “I just couldn’t get up and down and it seemed like the putts weren’t falling.  I mean I was hitting good shots, I just couldn’t get it going.”

His teammate, sophomore Evan Arvig, struggled in his 2nd day as well, shooting an 85 to give him a 36-hole total of 162 and a tie for 53rd place.  It was Arvig’s 1st State Tournament appearance.

Taking the Individual State Championship was Marshall junior Max Deutz, who shot a 143 to edge 3 other golfers who tied for 2nd place, 1-stroke back.

The Detroit Lakes boys team won their 2nd State Championship as they finished with a 2-day score of 606.  Their top golfer, Karter Smith, finished in a 3-way tie for 2nd place with a 144.  The Lakers had previously tied for the title with Orono in 2008.

Detroit Lakes girl's in lead after 1st day of Class AA State Golf Tournament

The Detroit Lakes girl’s golf team is in position for their 2nd State Championship after the 1st day of the Class AA State Golf Tournament at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan Wednesday.  The Lady Lakers are in 1st place after 18 holes Wednesday with a team score of 329.  Red Wing is a close 2nd at 330, followed by the defending champs, Minnewaska Area, at 345.  Red Wing was last year’s Class AA runner-up.

Leading Detroit Lakes is 7th grader Kate Smith, who is in 4th place after shooting a 77 Wednesday (39-38).  In the lead is Kaylee Benson of Jackson County Central with a 75 (37-38).  Becker’s Kourtney Williams and Breck’s Anna Lohr are tied for 2nd with 76’s. Lohr is the top returning qualifier, having finished 3rd last year (78-76—154).

The Lakers Trisa Hutchinson, a freshman, is in a tie for 8th place after an 81 (40-41).  She is tied with Perham’s Holly Karkela and Emily Isrealson of Staples-Motley.

Next up for D.L. were a couple more 9th graders.  Natalie Roth is in a tie for 15th with an 84 (43-41).  She was followed by Matty Tscheider, who is tied for 22nd with an 87 (44-43).  Junior Courtney Hedstrom is in a tie for 34th with a 90 (43-47), and 8th grader Sydney Busker is tied for 63rd with a 97 (46-51).

Perham’s 2nd individual, Kaylan Huber, is tied for 53rd with a 94 (52-42).

Minnewaska Area has won all 3 Class AA State Championships since golf moved to 3 classes in 2008.  Before that, Minnewaska had won 2-straight Class A titles going back to 2006, when the Lady Lakers won their State Championship.

Detroit Lakes, making their 4th State appearance, have brought home medals and a trophy with each previous trip to State, having finished in 3rd place twice (including last year) in addition to their 2006 title.

Dan Cavanagh in 2nd place at Class AA State Golf Meet after 1st day

Maybe the 4th time is the charm for Perham’s Dan Cavanagh.  The Yellowjacket junior is in 2nd place after the 1st round at the Class AA State Golf Tournament at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.  Cavanagh shot a 71 (34-37) on Wednesday to finish the 1st 18 holes 1-stroke behind Max Deutz of Marshall (35-35—70).

Cavanagh’s teammate, sophomore Evan Arvig, is in a tie for 28th, but just 7 strokes back with a 77 (42-35) in his 1st State Meet.

If experience counts for anything, Cavanagh may have the advantage in Thursday’s 2nd round.  Of the golfers in the top-6, he has the highest career finish at State, tying for 11th place last year (36-38—74).  Deutz, as well as Josh Polingo of Litchfield and Jordan Peters of Delano, who are tied for 3rd, are playing in their 1st State Tournament.  Detroit Lakes’ Karter Smith and Nick Forsberg of Staples-Motley are also in a tie for 3rd with 72’s on Wednesday.  Both competed at State last year, with Smith tying for 27th (37-40—77), and Forsberg tying for 34th (38-40—78).

In team competition, Marshall is in 1st place after Day 1 with a 299.  Detroit Lakes wasn’t far behind, shooting a 302, just 1-stroke ahead of Staples-Motley (303), and 4 strokes ahead of defending State champ, Orono (306).  Marshall and S-M didn’t compete at State last year, while the Lakers finished in 5th place.

Beau Hanson tied for 7th at Class A State Tournament; Frazee in 6th place

After a delay of an hour because of rain, the Frazee boys hit the links at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker for the Class A State Tournament Wednesday morning.  After a slow start, the defending Class A State Champion Beau Hanson got hot on the back-9 to finish with a 3-over par 76 to put him in a tie for 7th place.

Hanson’s score helped the Hornet team to 6th place after the 1st day of competition with a score of 350.  The first place team after 18 holes is Springfield with a 323.  Providence Academy is next with a 325, followed by Lanesborro (338) and the defending champ, Ortonville in 4th (344).  Springfield finished in 3rd place last year.

Hanson trail’s the leaders by 3 strokes heading into Thursday’s 2nd day.  In a tie for 1st place are Aaron Forgaard of Faribault and Sam Eisenhuth of BEST, who both shot 73’s.  The 2009 Class A State Champ, Dillon Schultz of Springfield, is in a tie for 4th (75).

Hanson had the highest score on the front-9 of any of the top-10 golfers wit ha 42.  But he had the lowest score on the back-9 in the entire field with a 34.  In winning the State title last year, Hanson shot a 71 (36-35) at Pebble Creek in a rain-shortened tournament.  He was in good company playing on the soggy course Wednesday.  He played in a 4-some with Schultz, Matt Chalberg of Trinity (3rd place, 74), and Jade Hasslen of Ortonville (9th, 77).

Frazee’s next golfer was Zack Ziegler, who finished in a tie for 47th with a 88 (44-44).  He was followed by Josh Kertscher in a tie for 53th (44-45), Travis Grey in a tie for 73rd with a 97 (46-51), Trevor Stilke in a tie for 75th  with a 99 (51-48), and Isaac Schermerhorn in 87th with a 111 (57-54).
