D.L. girls dominate field in Park Rapids Invite at Headwaters G.C.

The Detroit Lakes girl’s golf team continued their hot play Monday by dominating the field at the Park Rapids Invitational at Headwaters G.C.  The Lady Lakers shot an all-time school low of 311 to finish in 1st place by 41 strokes over the runner-ups, Pequot Lakes (352).  Perham finished in 9th place with a 389.

D.L.’s Kate Smith, an 8th grader, shot an even-par 72 for the 1st time in an 18-hole round to earn medalist honors.  Natalie Roth was the runner-up, shooting a 76. Five Lakers placed in the top-9, and all 7 varsity players shot under 90.

Detroit Lakes had shot a 318 twice this season, the team’s previous all-time low score.

The Perham girl's were led by Becca Huus, who shot an 89.  Destiny Mitchell was next with a 98, followed by Rachel Nelson with a 99.

Perham will compete in the HOL at Frazee G.C. on Tuesday, May 1.  Both the Lady Jackets and Detroit Lakes will play in the W-DC Invitational at White Tail Run G.C. on Thursday, May 3.

Perham boy's win HOL at Frazee; Beau Hanson takes medalist honors

The Perham boy’s golf team won their 3rd Heart O’ Lakes event of the season Monday, scoring a 150 at Frazee G.C.  The host Hornets finished in a tie for 2nd place with a 158 along with Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal.

Frazee’s Beau Hanson took advantage of playing on his home course by shooting a 2-under par 33 to take medalist honors.  The Hornets’ Zack Ziegler finished 3rd overall with a 36.

Perham’s Toby Curtis and Tom Huus tied for 4th place by shooting rounds of 37.  Evan Arvig also shot a 37.

The Yellowjackets now have 3 conference points and have a 3-point lead over H/U-H with Frazee sitting in 3rd place with 11 HOL points.

Next up for the Jackets and Frazee will be the HOL at Perham Lakeside G.C. on Thursday, May 3 at 2 p.m.

Lady Lakers setting team records in pair of weekend wins

The Laker girl’s golf team traveled to Bemidji and Grand Rapids last weekend to compete in a pair of invites.

On Friday, April 27, Detroit Lakes won the Bemidji Invitational at Town & Country G.C. with a 318.  The score matches the Laker’s record low set last week in Jordan, and set the new Bemidji Invitational record in the 25th Anniversary of the event.  The previous record was 338.

Lady Laker golfers finished in the top-6 spots individually.  Trisa Hutchinson was the meet medalist with a 76, followed by Natalie Roth in 2nd with a 78, and Kate Smith in 3rd with an 81.  Matty Tschider finished in a tie for 4th place with an 83, and Sydney Busker finished in a tie for 6th place with an 84.

On Saturday, Detroit Lakes played Pokegama G.C. in Grand Rapids.  It was the 1st time in team history that they had 3 girls shoot under 80 as they finished in 1st place with a 319.  Grand Rapids was a distant 2nd with a 331, followed by Bemidji in 3rd with a 351.

D.L. golfers occupied the top-3 spots once again.  Smith and Roth led the way, earning co-medalist honors with rounds of 78.  Hutchinson was next with a 79, followed by Tschider with an 84.

The Lady Lakers will compete in the Park Rapids Invitational on Monday, April 30.

Blueberry Pines and The Vintage host boy's golf events over the weekend

The Perham and Frazee boy’s golf team’s took part at the Blueberry Invitational at Blueberry Pines G.C. near Menahga on Friday, April 27.  The Hornets Beau Hanson finished 3rd overall with a 77 as Frazee finished in 8th place overall with a 360.  Perham didn’t have anyone below an 80, but they did finish in 2nd place as a team with a 328.

The Yellowjacket boys were a full 32 strokes behind the team champs, Staples-Motley, which fired a 296.  The Cardinals were led by co-medalist’s Mike Strain and Nick Forsberg, who both shot 70’s.

Perham was led by Tom Huus, who shot an 81.  Nick Kalina and Nick Bahls both shot 82’s, followed by Dan Cavanagh and Evan Arvig with 83’s.

After Hanson, Zack Ziegler shot an 85 for the Hornets, followed by Isaac Schermerhorn (98) and Brady Mickelson (100).

 

The Jackets went on to play in the Cardinal Invitational, hosted by Staples-Motley at The Vintage G.C., on Saturday, April 28. S-M cruised to another team title with a 303, followed by Bemidji in 2nd place with a 313, and Perham in 3rd with a 319.

The medalist was S-M’s Forsberg with a 72.  Second place went to Trey Dale from Bemidji with a 75. 

Cavanagh finished tied for Dan was tied for 3rd with three other golfers with a 76.  Arvig finished in 7th place overall with a 78, followed by Toby Curtis with an 82 and Huus with an 83.

HOL Conference play resumes Monday, April 30 at Frazee G.C. staring at 5 p.m.

Jacket boys put 4 in top-5 as they win HOL at Pelican Rapids

The Perham boy’s put 4 golfers in the top-5 as they cruised to an easy victory in the HOL at Pelican Rapids Thursday at Birchwood G.C.  The Jackets shot a 141 as a team, 18 strokes better than 2nd place Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal (159).  The host Vikings were 3rd with a 161, while Frazee finished in 5th place with a 165.

PR’s Casey Bruggeman was on fire, taking medalist hnors with a 32.  But after that, it was all Yellowjackets.  Dan Cavanagh was the runner-up with a 34.  Evan Arvig finished in 3rd place with a 35, followed by Thomas Huus and Nick Kalina, who both carded 36’s to finish 4th and 5th, respectively.

Beau Hanson led the Hornets with a 38.  Zack Ziegler was next with a 39, followed by Isaac Schermerhorn (44), Calvin Streeper (44),  Brady Mickelson (52), and Matt Tangen (55).

The Perham and Frazee boys will compete in the Blueberry Invitational at Blueberry Pines G.C. near Menahga on Friday, April 27.  The Yellowjacket boys will play at The Vintage G.C. on Saturday, April 28 in the S-M Invitational. 

HOL Conference play resumes Monday, April 30 at Perham Lakeside G.C. staring at 2 p.m.

PR girls get easy win at HOL at Hawley

The Pelican Rapids girls won by 19 strokes Tuesday for their 3rd victory to open the conference schedule in the HOL at Hawley G.C.  The Vikings finished with a 185, with Perham coming in 2nd with a 204.  The Frazee girls finished in 6th place with a 231.

Mackenzie Strand was the medalist with a round of 40.  Perham’s Rachel Nelson finished 4th overall with a 46.

Next up for the Lady Jackets was Destiny Mitchell with a 50.  Becca Huus carded a 51, followed by Shannon Karrels (57) and Liz Sonnenberg (58).

Frazee’s leading golfer was Alexis Parsons with a 53.  Mary Tychsen shot a 57, followed by Becky Karasch (60), Maddisan Parsons (61), Kerria Robinson (66), and Cara Roers (76).

The Lady Jackets return to action on Monday, April 30 at at the Park Rapids Invitational at Headwaters G.C.  Perham and the Hornets get back to HOL play on May 1 at Frazee G.C. at 5 p.m.

Perham girls 3rd, Frazee 9th at Wildflower G.C.

The Perham girls finished in 3rd place and the Frazee girls were 9th at the Pelican Rapids Invitational at Wildflower G.C. Tuesday afternoon.  Staples-Motley won the team title with a score of 367.  Pelican Rapids was right behind in 2nd with a 369, followed by the Yellowjackets in 3rd with a 388.  Frazee finished 9th overall with a 469.

The medalist at the event was Staples-Motley’s Emily Isrealson with an 82.  Peham had a pair of golfers in the top-5 with Rachel Nelson taking 3rd with an 86, followed by Becca Huus in 4th with an 88.

Other Perham golfers included: Lexi Richter (107), Destiny Mitchell (107), and Liz Sonnenberg (121).

Frazee was led by Mary Tychsen’s 111.  Other Hornet golfers were: Maddison Parsons (114), Alexis Parsons (118), Becky Karasch (126), and Kerria Robinson (139).

Frazee head coach Dave Conzemius is happy with the progress his young team is showing.  They improved by 50 strokes on the Wildflower course from a year ago.

“Our scores are still higher than the top teams, but it’s all about taking baby steps,” he said.  Three of his top golfers are just sophomores (Tychsen, Karasch, Robinson), followed by a 9th grader (Alexis Parsons) and a 7th grader (Maddisan Parsons).

Both Perham and Frazee will play in the HOL at Hawley on Thursday, April 26.

Perham boys win HOL golf opener in Hawley

The Heart O’ Lakes boy’s golfers were at the Hawley G.C. on a pleasant Monday afternoon for the 1st conference meet of the season.  Perham won a team title with a 299, a full 21 strokes better than Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal’s 320.  H/U-H is the defending HOL champions.

The Jackets were led by medalist Evan Arvig, who shot a 2-under par, 69.  Dan Cavanagh shot a 71 to tie with Frazee’s Beau Hanson.  Cavanagh was awarded 2nd place based on a scorecard playoff.  In a scorecard playoff, the tied golfers compare scores on the No. 1 handicap hole played in the event.  If they had the same score on that hole, they go to the No. 2 handicap hole, and proceed until one golfer had a lower score on a comparative hole.

Next up for the Jackets was Kyle Dykhoff with a 79. Tom Huus shot an 80, followed by Nick Bahls and Blake Kunza with 87’s.

The Hornets’ Zack Ziegler finished in 5th place with a 77.   Frazee’s 3rd golfer was Isaac Schermerhorn with a 95, followed by Calvin Streeper (97), Brady Mickelson (98), and Matt Tangen (100).

Both Perham and Frazee will compete in the HOL at Pelican Rapids on Thursday, April 26 at Birchwood G.C.

Yellowjacket golfers host Perham Invite; Hanson takes 1st, followed by Cavanagh

The Yellowjacket boys golf team hosted the Perham Invitational at Lakeside G.C. Thursday afternoon.  The Perham Black team finish in 1st place with a round of 320, 4 strokes better than the runner-ups, Fergus Falls (324).  Frazee finished in 4th place with a 367 and the Perham Gold team finished 6th with a 373.

Leading the way was medalist Beau Hanson of Frazee, who shot a 73.  Perham’s Dan Cavanagh finished in 2nd place with a 74, followed by Nick Bahls in 3rd with a 78.

Other Perham Black golfers included: Evan Arvig (82), Tom Huus (86), Kyle Dykhoff (90), and Nick Kalina (90).

Frazee golfers included: Zach Ziegler (84), Isaac Schermerhorn (102), Matt Tangen (108), Calvin Streeper (109), and Austin Torma (114)

The Perham Gold team consisted of: Blake Kunza (87), Brandon Olson (89), Nate Bormann (97), Zach Langendorfer (100), Mark Murphy (118) and Kevin Thompson (133).

Both the Perham and Frazee boys will compete in the HOL at Hawley on Monday, April 23.

Pelican Rapids girls run away with HOL at Perham Lakeside

The Pelican Rapids girl’s golf team ran away with the team title in the HOL at Perham Lakeside Thursday evening.  The Lady Vikings whot a round of 174, a full 23 strokes better than the runner-ups from Perham (197).  The Frazee girls finished in 6th place with a 233.

Pelican Rapids put 4 girls in the top-5, led by medalist Chaiwon Youn with a round of 41.  Perham’s Rachel Nelson was 3rd overall with a 42.

Other Lady Jacket golfers included: Destiny Mitchell (49), Lexi Richter (52), Becca Huus (54), Liz Sonnenberg (63) and Shannn Karels (87).

The Frazee girls were led by Mary Tychen’s 50.  Other Hornet golfers included: Alexis Parsons (57);  Becky Karasch (63);  Cara Roers (63);  Maddisan Parsons (65) and Nicole Barvels (70).

“Another good showing from the Lady Hornet golfers as our team score was 43 shots better than a year ago at Perham,” Frazee head coach Dave Conzemius said. “And we still have room for improvement.”

Perham was set to compete in the S-M Invitational at The Legacy G.C. on Saturday, April 21.

The Lady Hornets will be off until the Pelican Rapids Invitational on Tuesday, April 24.

D.L. boys finish 3rd at Wildflower G.C.

The Detroit Lakes boy’s golf team finished in 3rd place in the invite they hosted at Wildflower G.C. Tuesday afternoon.  The Lakers tied with 3 other teams with a round of 312, and ended in 3rd place based on scorecard playoffs.  Staples-Motley won the team title with a round of 309.  D.L., Bemidji and Grand Rapids all finished with scores of 312.

S-M’s Nick Forsberg earned medalist honors with a round of 73.  The Lakers were led by Ben Mallow, who shot a round of 76 to finish 4th individually.  Tyler Baukol and Karter Smith both shot a 78.

This weekend, the Lakers will split into 2 teams for a pair of 2-day invites.  One group of D.L. golfers will head back to Jordan to play at Ridges at Sand Creek along with the Lady Lakers.  The other team of Laker boys will compete at the Pequot Lakes Invite at The Preserve G.C. on Friday, and the The Pines G.C. on Saturday.

Lady Jacket golfers 2nd in HOL opener

The defending HOL girls’ HOL Golf Champion Perham Yellowjackets opened defense of their title Tuesday at the HOL at Tipsinah Mounds, hosted by West Central Area.  The Lady Jackets played well, and had 3 golfers in the top-6, but they were edged by Pelican Rapids by 1-stroke for the team title.  Pelican Rapids finished with a team round of 181, followed by the Jackets with a 182 and Frazee in 3rd with a 208.

Junior Rachel Nelson led Perham with a 2nd place finish after a round of 42.  Another junior, Destiny Mitchell, finished 4th with a 45, and 8th grader Becca Huus tied for 5th with a 46.

Junior Lexi Richter was next for the Lady Jackets with a 49.  7th grader Liz Sonnenberg shot a 51, and sophomore Michaela Soule shot a 58.

Pelican Rapids’ Mackenzie Strand was the meet medalist with a round of 38.

Perham will host the  next HOL event on Thursday, April 19 at Perham Lakeside Golf Club starting at 5 p.m.

Lady Hornet golfers finish 3rd in HOL opener

The Frazee Lady Hornet golf team opened the 2012 golf season with a Heart O’Lakes conference meet hosted by West Central Area at Tipsinah Mounds golf course, near Elbow Lake. The Lady Hornets had a great opening round that saw them finish in 3rd place behind conference stalwarts Pelican Rapids and Perham.  Pelican Rapids led the way with a team round of 181.  The Yellowjackets were next with a 182, followed by Frazee with a 208.

Sophomore Mary Tychsen and freshmen Alexis Parsons led the way for Frazee with career-low rounds of 47 and just missed out on a top-six finish that would have earned them medals. 7th grader Maddisan Parson was next with a 55, followed by senior Nicole Barvels with 59, sophomore Becky Karasch 63, and sophomore Cara Roers had a 69.

Mackenzie Strand won medalist honors with a score of 38 and was followed by Rachel Nelson of Perham with a 42.

Frazee’s round of 208 34 shots better than their best score a season ago.

 “This was a great start to the season for these young ladies,” head coach Dave Conzemius said. “It is a credit to the girls on the work that they have put in to become better golfers. Hopefully we can stay consistent and finish in the top half of the conference for most of the season.”

Frazee is back in action on Thursday, April 19 with HOL Conference meet at Perham Lakeside Golf Club starting at 5 p.m.

D.L. boys finish 4th in Hermantown Invite at Ridges at Sand Creek

The Detroit Lakes boy’s golf team competed in the 2-day, 36-hole Hermantown Invitational on April 13-14.  But the invite wasn’t played in Hermantown, a suburd of Duluth, but it was played at the site of the Class AA State Meet, Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.

The host Hermantown Hawks edged Litchfield by 3 strokes to capture the team title with a score of 628.  Detroit Lakes finished 4th with a 641 (331 Friday, 310 Saturday).

Litchfield’s Josh Polingo was the low scorer of the invite with a 36-hole total of 150 (77-73).  Four other golfers were tied at 155. 

D.L.’s top scorer was Austin Rusness, who finished in 8th place with a 158 (79-79).

The Lakers will host an invitational at Wildflower G.C. on Pelican Lake on Tuesday, April 13.

Perham Girls Golf Quad and PHS softball at DGF for April 13 canceled
The Perham Girls' Golf Quad schedued for Friday, April 13 at Perham Lakeside Golf Club with the Lady Jackets, Wadena-Deer Creek, Staples-Motley and Pelican Rapids, has been canceled and will not be made up.
The Perham softball game at D-G-F was also postponed.  No reschedule date has been set.
