Frazee boys tune-up for 6A Meet with invite at Pebble Lake

The Frazee boy’s golf team tuned-up for their section meet by playing the course that will host the 6A Championships, Pebble Lake G.C. in Fergus Falls on Wednesday.  The meet featured 9 of the 14 teams from Section 6A.

Mahnomen came out of top with a 337, followed by Otter Tail Central in 2nd with a 343, followed by Frazee with 345.

Beau Hanson earned medalist honors with a 73, 6-strokes ahead of the runner-up from OTC.  Zack Ziegler was next with an 81 for the Hornets.  That duo was as good as any 1-2 punch at the meet Wednesday.  The difference that the Hornets will have to make up comes at the other end of the line-up.  Frazee was the only team in the top-8 with a scoring golfer in 3 digits (100+).

If the top of Frazee’s line-up can remain consistent, and the rest shave off a couple of stokes, the Hornets could be in prime position to repeat at Section 6A champs.

The 6A Sub-Section Meet will be June 1 at Pebble Lake, with the 6A Championship Meet on June 4 at Pebble Lake.

Perham's Rachel Nelson wins HOL Championship, but Pelican Rapids takes team title

Perham’s Rachel Nelson shot an 83 (42-41) on Tuesday at Wildflower G.C. to capture the Heart O’ Lakes Individual Championship.  Nelson finished with a 41.25 scoring average to take the title.  She was one of 3 Yellowjacket golfers to earn All-Conference honors at the HOL Championships, but Pelican Rapids had 6 golfers in the top-10 of the season standings to take the team title.  Perham finished 2nd, while Frazee finished 6th.

Pelican Rapids’ team win snaps Perham’s 6-year reign as HOL champs.

Perham’s Becca Huus and Destiny Mitchell both earned All-Conference honors for the Lady Jackets.  Huus finished 6th overall with a 46.25 scoring average in HOL meets.  Mitchell was 7th overall with a 46.38 average.

"We had a great team season," Jacket head coach Cory Solberg said.  "Individually, Rachel was a stud Tuesday.  She knew what she had to do to win the conference and she stayed cool, calm and collected.  She was up 2 shots with two holes to go and she went par, par.  Our whole team is proud of Rachel and the accomplishment of Rebecca and Destiny.  Lexi, Liz, and Michaela also had great seasons, and worked extremely hard on their game this season."

Frazee had one golfer, Alexis Parsons, earn All-Conference honors.  She finished 14th overall with a 50.0 scoring average.

"Alexis has made a great strides from last season which has seen her scoring average drop over 10 shots per nine holes,” Frazee head coach Dave Conzemius said. “It is a great accomplishment for her as a freshmen to make all-conference and she will continue to work hard and will be a better a golfer as she gets older. I am very proud of all of the girls for their continued effort this season and steady improvement they have shown. It is a truly a pleasure to coach this fine group of young ladies."

The next meet for Perham will be the Sub-Section Meet on Wednesday, May 30 at Headwaters G.C. in Park Rapids.  The Section 8AA Championship will be Friday, June 1 at Longbow G.C. in Walker.

Frazee’s Sub-Section Meet will be June 1 at Fergus Falls at Pebble Lake G.C.  The Section 6A Championship will be June 4 at Pebble Lake.

Perham boy's win HOL Golf Championship; Beau Hanson wins 4th individual title

The Perham boys continued their hot play Tuesday as they recaptured the Heart O’ Lakes Championship with a 305 at Wildflower G.C.  Perham won every conference meet this season.  Defending conference champs, Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal, finished 3rd on Tuesday, and 2nd overall in the season standings.  Frazee finished 2nd on Tuesday with a 332, and 3rd in the conference for the season.

For the 4th straight season, Frazee’s Beau Hanson was the HOL Individual Champion.  He finished with a round of 70 at Wildflower Tuesday, and finished with a 34.9 9-hole scoring average in 9 HOL events.

Perham’s Dan Cavanagh was one of 6 Jacket golfers to earn All-Conference honors.  Cavanagh was the HOL runner-up with a 36.3 scoring average.  He finished 3rd overall on Tuesday with a 74.  Nick Kalina was Tuesday’s runner-up with a 73.  He finished 6th in the season standings with a 38.9 avg.

Evan Arvig was 3rd overall in the HOL with a 37.1 average.  He finished 5th Tuesday with a 78.  Tom Huus was 10th overall in the HOL (40.0 ave), followed by Kyle Dykhoff in 11th (40.0 ave) and Toby Curtis in 13th (40.5 ave).

Frazee’s Zach Ziegler also earned All-Conference honors.  He finished 6th on Tuesday with an 80, and had a 38.5 average for 5th place in the conference.

Perham will look to shave a few strokes off of their 305 score from Tuesday if they hope to advance out of the Section 8AA Tournament next week.  The Sub-Section Meet will be Wednesday, May 30 at Headwaters G.C. in Park Rapids.  The Section Championship will be Friday, June 1 at Longbow G.C. in Walker.

The Jackets will have to overtake the defending State Champs, Detroit Lakes, to advance.  For that, head coach Jeff Tweeton thinks his team needs to be around the 300 score.

“I think they can, now that they know somewhat how to do it,” Tweeton said.  “D.L. is strong, of course, but they can be beaten.  We need to get as close to 300 as possible.  Now, DL might go even lower, but if they do, they do.  300 would give us a good shot, though.”

Frazee will have their sub-section meet on June 1 at Pebble Lake G.C. in Fergus Falls.  The Section 6A Championship will be June 4 at Pebble Lake.  The Hornets are the defending Section Championships.

Cavanagh is co-medalist at Fargo North Invite

Despite a shaky finish, Perham’s Dan Cavanagh tied for medalist honors last weekend at the Fargo North Invitational at Edgewood G.C. May 4-5.  The Yellowjacket senior shot a 36-hole total of 145 (73-72) despite bogeying the final 2 holes of the tournament.  He tied with Cam Hager of Fargo Shanley (74-71).

Cavanagh’s finish helped the Jackets to a 6th place finish in the 2-day event with a 624 (310-314).  The Laker boys finished in 4th place with a 616.

Both team’s were well behind Moorhead, who won the team title with a 597.

Next up for Perham behind Cavanagh was Toby Curtis, who shot a 156 (78-78).  Evan Arvig was next with a 157 (80-77), followed by Tom Huus with a 172 (85-87).

“The team played well, for the most part,” Perham head coach Jeff Tweeton said.  “We had to take an 87 on Saturday, which really hurt us.  Hopefully someone will step up.”

Kyle Dykhoff, who shot a 79 on the 1st day of competition, wasn’t able to compete on Day 2 because of a prior commitment.

“It would have been interesting to see what he could have shot on Saturday,” Tweeton said of Dykhoff.  “If he shoots what he shot on Friday, we come in at 306 or so, which would have made a huge difference.”

Tweeton was happy with the way his team showed improvement on a longer course.

“At least they’re starting to show some signs of being able to play these longer courses,” Tweeton said.  “It should have given them some confidence that they can play with pretty much anyone, which will be a huge boost come sub-sections and sections.”

The Lakers didn’t have a top-5 golfer, but they did have 4 golfers shoot under a 160 over 18 holes.  Karter Smith led the way for D.L. with a 151 (76-75), which was good for a tie for 7th place.  Tyler Baukol was tied for 10th with a 152 (75-77), followed by Austin Rusness (156) and Ben Mallow (157).
