The University of Minnesota ‘Golden Gopher Spectacular’ will
be Thursday, June 21 at Perham Lakeside Golf Course. The 4-person scramble will cost $125 per golfer. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with a
banquet starting at 12 p.m. The
shotgun start to the golf tournament will be at 1:15 p.m.
Several Gopher coaches and athletes will be in
attendance.

The Frazee girls golf team handed out their awards after the
Frazee Golf Fundraiser Scramble this past Saturday at Frazee Golf Course. The
team cut their scoring average by an amazing 44 shots per 9 holes from a season
ago.
Letter winners

Parsons, Mary Tychsen, Becky Karasch, Cara Roers.

Frazee’s Beau Hanson finished in a tie for 3rd
place overall in the Class A State Tournament at Pebble Creek G.C. in
Becker. The Hornet senior finished
with a 151 (77-74). He finished
strong, shooting a 34 on his final 9 holes in Wednesday’s final round.
Cordell Weber, a sophomore from Martin County West, won the
Class A State Championship with a 144 (71-73). Sam Eisenhuth, another sophomore from Northeast Range, was
the runner-up with a 1445 (73-72).
Hanson tied with Aaron Walzak, a freshman from Mountain Lake
Christian, and Cass Lake-Bena senior Dakotah Brunelle.
Hanson was making his 4th State Tournament appearance. He finished 4th in 2009 as a freshman
in the Class AA Tournament with a 149. He won the 2010 Class A State
Championship with a 1-day total of 71. The 2nd day of competition was
canceled that year due to weather. Last year, Hanson finished in a 4-way
tie for 3rd place with a 151. He will golf at Odessa College in Texas next year.
Frazee senior Zack Ziegler finished in a tie for 49th
place with a 2-day total of 173 (89-84)
Perham junior Rachel Nelson finished in a tie for 36th
place in the Class AA Girl’s Tournament with a 2-day total of 177 (91-86). Detroit Lakes ran away with Class AA
girls team title with a 619, led by 8th grader Kate Smith, who won
medalist honors with a 4-under par 140, a girl’s State record.

The Detroit Lakes golf teams are the class of Class AA in
Minnesota. Both the Laker boys and girls captured Class AA State
Championships Wednesday at Ridges at Sand Creek G.C. in Jordan.
The Detroit Lakes girls continued their dominating season
all the way through to a Class AA State Championship this week at Ridges at
Sand Creek G.C. in Jordan. The
Lady Lakers took a 27-stroke lead into the 2nd day of competition
Wednesday. They closed out the
tournament by outshooting the field by 8 strokes, finishing with a 2-day total
of 619 (308-311). Minnewaska Area
was a distant 2nd with a 654 (335-319), followed by St. Croix
Lutheran in 3rd (691).
Laker 8th grader Kate Smith won the Class AA Individual
Championship with a 4-under par 140 (70-70), a Class AA record and tied for the
all-time lowest girl’s score at a State Tournament (Katie Detlefsen, Minnehaha
Academy, 2006). She is the
youngest girl’s State Champion, and the 1st individual State Champion
from Detroit Lakes.
Smith was 9 strokes ahead of runner-up Kourtney Williams of
Becker, who finished with a 149 (77-72).
Williams, a senior, was also the runner-up last year. Smith finished 5th as a 7th
grader last year.
Next up for the Lakers was sophomore Trisa Hutchinson, who
finished 4th with a 154 (77-77). Matty Tschider, another sophomore, finished tied for 10th
with a 162 (80-82). Sophomore
Natalie Roth was tied for 17th with a 165 (83-82), Courtney Hedstrom, the team’s only
senior, finished 20th with a 166 (81-85), and freshman Sydney Busker
finished 23rd with a 170 (86-84).
It’s the 2nd State Championship for the Lady
Lakers. They also won the title in
2006. D.L. was the runner-up last year with a 658, as Red Wing won the title
with a 641. Detroit Lakes was also
named the State Academic Champions for 2012.

The Detroit Lakes golf teams are the class of Class AA in
Minnesota. Both the Laker boys and
girls captured Class AA State Championships Wednesday at Ridges at Sand Creek
G.C. in Jordan.
The Detroit Lakes boy’s won their 2nd straight
State Championship, and 3rd overall (they also won in 2008) by
holding off Hermantown. The Lakers
were in 1st place after the 1st day of competition on
Tuesday with a 291, 3 strokes ahead of Staples-Motley, and 11 ahead of
Hermantown.
But Hermantown had the best round of the day on Wednesday, a
300. That, combined with D.L.’s
310, made things interesting down the stretch, but the Lakers held on,
finishing with a 2-day total of 601 to take the title. Hermantown finished with a 602,
followed by Staples-Motley in 3rd place with a 607.
D.L. won last year’s title with a 606 (302-304).
Hermantown did have the individual champion, as Taylor
Sundbom, a senior, took the title with a 142 (73-69). D.L. junior Karter Smith was the runner-up with a 145
(67-78). The defending Class AA champ,
Max Duetz of Marshall, finished 5th with a 147. Marshall, last year’s team runner-up,
finished 5th with a 617.
The Lakers Michael Herzog finished in a tie for 7th
place with a 149 (76-73), followed by Tyler Baukol in a tie for 16th
with a 152 (71-81). Austin Rusness
was the team’s 4th scoring golfer, finishing in a tie for 36th
with a 158 (80-78).

The Detroit Lakes Lady Laker golf team has a commanding lead
after the 1st day of the Class AA State Tournament at Ridges at Sand
Creek G.C. in Jordan. The Lakers
shot a 308 on the 1st day Tuesday and will take a 27-stroke lead
into Wednesday’s 2nd round.
Minnewaska Area is a distant 2nd with a 335.
Eighth grader Kate Smith is the 1st day leader
with a round of 70 (37-33).
Minnewaska senior Brianna Janu of Minnewaska was in 2nd place
with a 75.
The Lakers other scoring golfers were: Trisa Hutchinson (T-4th,
41-36—77); Matty Tschieder (T-8th,
40-40—80); Courtney Hedstrom (T-10th,
41-40—81); Natalie Roth (T-17th,
41-42—83); and Sydney Busker (T-29th,
47-39—86).
Perham’s Rachel Nelson is in a tie for 44th place
after the 1st round with a 91 (49-42).

The Detroit Lakes boy’s and girls both defended their
Section 8AA titles Monday at Longbow G.C. in Walker and will return to State,
along with Perham’s Rachel Nelson.
The Laker boys, the defending Class AA State Champs,
returned to State with a 1st place score of 308. Fergus Falls was 2nd with a
313, followed by Perham in 3rd with a 315.
Austin Rusness, a junior, led the D.L. boys with a 3rd
place finish with a 74. Karter
Smith, another junior was tied for 4th with a 75. Michael Herzog was next for the Lakers
with a 78, followed by Tyler Baukol and Nate Bausman with 81’s.
D.L. will be making their 8th overall trip to
State, and will be looking for their 3rd title overall (2008, 2011)
Perham senior’s Dan Cavanagh and Evan Arvig missed a chance
to qualify for State by 1-stroke with 78’s. Senior Toby Curtis and junior Nick Kalina both had 79’s.
Girls
The Laker girls returned to State with a 309 Monday at
Longbow. They finished a
dominating 69 strokes ahead of 2nd place Thief River Falls (378). The Lady Jackets finished 3rd
with a 387.
D.L. golfers finished in the top-4 spots individually.
Eighth grader Kate Smith earned medalist honors with a 75. Natalie Roth, a sophomore, was the
runner-up with a 75. Trisa
Hutchinson and Matty Tschider, both sophomores, finished tied for 3rd
with 79’s.
The Lady Lakers finished 2nd at State last
year. They are making their 5th
State appearance overall, and will be looking for their 2nd
championship (2006). Smith was the
team’s top finisher at State last year, tying for 5th place with a
159. Hutchinson was tied for 14th
with a 164, Roth finished 17th
(166), and Tschider tied for 19th (169).
Perham junior Rachel Nelson will be making her 1st
trip to State. She finished 7th
overall with an 88. Eighth grader Becca
Huus shot a 92 for the Lady Jackets, followed by junior Destiny Mitchell (98)
and sophomore Michaela Soule (109).
The Class AA State Tournament will be held at Ridges at Sand
Creek G.C. in Jordan June 12-13. Girl’s
tee times will start on hole No. 1 and No. 10 at 7:30 a.m. Boy’s will tee off on No. 1 and No. 10
at 11:40 a.m.

The Frazee boy’s golf team will send a pair of individuals
to the State Class A Golf Meet.
Hornet senior’s Beau Hanson and Zack Ziegler will compete at Becker’s
Pebble Creek G.C. June 12-13.
Hanson won the Section 6A Individual Championship Monday at
Pebble Lake G.C. in Fergus Falls with an even-par 72. Hanson shot par on all 18 holes. The 4-time Heart O’ Lakes Conference Champion will be making
his 4th trip to State.
He finished 4th in 2009 as a freshman in the Class AA
Tournament with a 149. He won the
2010 Class A State Championship with a 1-day total of 71. The 2nd day of competition
was canceled that year due to weather.
Last year, Hanson finished in a 4-way tie for 3rd place with
a 151.
Ziegler finished in 3rd place overall at Monday’s
6A Championship with an 82. He
competed in his 1st State Tournament last year, finishing tied for
30th with a 168.
Ziegler will tee off at 12:52 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12 on
Pebble Creek’s ‘Red’ Course.
Hanson will tee off at 1:10 p.m. on the ‘White’ Course.
Mahnomen won the team title with a score of 339. Otter Tail Central was a distant 2nd
with a 347.
In the 6A Girl’s Championship, Barnesville won the team
title with a 403, 5 strokes better than Lake Park Audubon’s 408. Barnesville’s Sami Hammer earned
medalist honors with a 92.
Frazee freshman Alexis Parsons finished in 15th place
overall with a 107. Sophomore Becky
Karasch finished 17th with a 109.

The Frazee boy’s golf team will not have a chance to repeat
as Section 6A champs after the South Sub-Section Meet Friday at Pebble Lake
Golf Club in Fergus Falls. The
Hornets boy’s finished in 4th place with a 350.
The top-2 teams from the sub-section advance to the Section
Championship June 4 at Pebble Lake G.C. The top-6 individuals outside of the
golfers from the qualifying teams also advance to the section finals.
Pillager won the boy’s team title with a 334. Otter Tail Central was 2nd
with a 346, just ahead of Park Christian (347) with the Hornets 4 strokes
behind OTC.
Frazee did have the top-2 individuals as Beau Hanson earned
medalist honors with a 76, and teammate Zack Ziegler taking 2nd with
a 79. Both seniors will advance as
individuals to the 6A Championship June 4.
The Lady Hornets will also have 2 golfers advance to the 6A
Championship. Becky Karasch, a sophomore, finished 6th overall with
a 103, and freshman Alexis Parsons tied for 10th with a 105. As a
team, Frazee finished in 6th place with a 446, minus one of their
top golfers, Mary Tychsen, who was unable to participate.
“Good day for our girls with Becky and Alexis advancing,”
head coach Dave Conzemius said. “We
were shorthanded without our second best player (Tychsen). With her, we would have been in the mix
as a team as well.”
Barnesville won the South Sub-Section girl’s team title with
a 414. Nevis finished in 2nd
place with a 427.
Janelle Kappes of Ada-Borup/Norman County West was the
medalist with a round of 91.
