Lady Lakers win State Golf Championship

The Detroit Lakes golf teams are the class of Class AA in Minnesota.  Both the Laker boys and girls captured Class AA State Championships Wednesday at Ridges at Sand Creek G.C. in Jordan.

The Detroit Lakes girls continued their dominating season all the way through to a Class AA State Championship this week at Ridges at Sand Creek G.C. in Jordan.  The Lady Lakers took a 27-stroke lead into the 2nd day of competition Wednesday.  They closed out the tournament by outshooting the field by 8 strokes, finishing with a 2-day total of 619 (308-311).  Minnewaska Area was a distant 2nd with a 654 (335-319), followed by St. Croix Lutheran in 3rd (691).

Laker 8th grader Kate Smith won the Class AA Individual Championship with a 4-under par 140 (70-70), a Class AA record and tied for the all-time lowest girl’s score at a State Tournament (Katie Detlefsen, Minnehaha Academy, 2006).  She is the youngest girl’s State Champion, and the 1st individual State Champion from Detroit Lakes.

Smith was 9 strokes ahead of runner-up Kourtney Williams of Becker, who finished with a 149 (77-72).  Williams, a senior, was also the runner-up last year.  Smith finished 5th as a 7th grader last year.

Next up for the Lakers was sophomore Trisa Hutchinson, who finished 4th with a 154 (77-77).  Matty Tschider, another sophomore, finished tied for 10th with a 162 (80-82).  Sophomore Natalie Roth was tied for 17th with a 165 (83-82),  Courtney Hedstrom, the team’s only senior, finished 20th with a 166 (81-85), and freshman Sydney Busker finished 23rd with a 170 (86-84).

It’s the 2nd State Championship for the Lady Lakers.  They also won the title in 2006. D.L. was the runner-up last year with a 658, as Red Wing won the title with a 641.  Detroit Lakes was also named the State Academic Champions for 2012.

D.L. boy's win 2nd straight State Golf Championship

The Detroit Lakes golf teams are the class of Class AA in Minnesota.  Both the Laker boys and girls captured Class AA State Championships Wednesday at Ridges at Sand Creek G.C. in Jordan.

The Detroit Lakes boy’s won their 2nd straight State Championship, and 3rd overall (they also won in 2008) by holding off Hermantown.  The Lakers were in 1st place after the 1st day of competition on Tuesday with a 291, 3 strokes ahead of Staples-Motley, and 11 ahead of Hermantown.

But Hermantown had the best round of the day on Wednesday, a 300.  That, combined with D.L.’s 310, made things interesting down the stretch, but the Lakers held on, finishing with a 2-day total of 601 to take the title.  Hermantown finished with a 602, followed by Staples-Motley in 3rd place with a 607.

D.L. won last year’s title with a 606 (302-304).

Hermantown did have the individual champion, as Taylor Sundbom, a senior, took the title with a 142 (73-69).  D.L. junior Karter Smith was the runner-up with a 145 (67-78).  The defending Class AA champ, Max Duetz of Marshall, finished 5th with a 147.  Marshall, last year’s team runner-up, finished 5th with a 617.

The Lakers Michael Herzog finished in a tie for 7th place with a 149 (76-73), followed by Tyler Baukol in a tie for 16th with a 152 (71-81).  Austin Rusness was the team’s 4th scoring golfer, finishing in a tie for 36th with a 158 (80-78).
