Perham boys advance to 8AA Golf Championship

The Perham boys golf team will advance to the Section 8AA Championship after finishing in 3rd place at the Sub-Section Meet at Headwaters G.C. Wednesday. Fergus Falls won the boy’s team title with a collective round of 298. Detroit Lakes was close behind in 2nd with a 302, followed by Perham in 3rd with a 340.

The top individual golfer was Chris Swenson of Fergus Falls, who shot a 67, 6 strokes ahead of Michael Herzog, the runner-up from Detroit Lakes (73). Golfers from Fergus Falls and D.L. took the top-6 individual spots.

Perham’s Eric Huus finished 7th individually with a 78. Blake Kunza had the next best score for the Jackets with an 80.

Frazee finished in 7th place with a 416. Calvin Streeper just missed advancing individually. He finished in a 3-way tie with a 93, but lost out in a playoff where only 2 of the 3 golfers could advance.

The Section 8AA Championship will be Monday, June 2 at Longbow G.C. in Walker.

Lady Jackets finish 3rd at Sub-Section; 2 Frazee girls advance

The 2-time defending Class AA State Champs from Detroit Lakes cruised through their 1st step towards a 3-peat, after a dominating win in the 8AA Sub-Section Meet at Wildflower G.C. on Wednesday. The Lady Lakers finished with a 284, 107 strokes ahead of the runner-up team, Pelican Rapids, who shot a 391. Perham finished 3rd with a 393. All 3 teams advance to the 8AA Championship, which will be at Longbow G.C. in Walker on June 2.

The 6 D.L. golfers were the only girl’s to shoot under 80, led by Kate Smith’s 68. Smith is the 2-time defending State Champion.

Perham was led by Becca Huus, who shot a 91. Liz Sonnenberg was next on the team with a 99.

Frazee finished with a 425, good for 5th place. A pair of Hornet golfers will advance to the Section Championship. Alexis Parsons was the 2nd individual qualifier with a 98. Brittany Lormis won a playoff to advance after shooting a 102.

Huus wins title, as Lady Jackets tie for HOL crown

The Perham girl’s golf team secured a tie for the Heart O’ Lakes Conference championship on Tuesday at Wildflower G.C. The Lady Jackets went into the meet with the HOL lead, and secured their 2nd straight championship by tying for 1st in the opening 9 holes, and taking 2nd in the 2nd 9.

The HOL girls play the 18-hole Wildflower G.C. as 2, 9-hole events, for the conference championship.

Perham’s Becca Huus became the 3rd straight Lady Jacket golfer to win the HOL crown. Huus, a sophomore, won the scoring title with a conference average of 41.29 per 9 holes. Rachel Nelson, a 2013 PHS graduate, won the past 2 HOL individual titles.

In the opening 9 holes on Tuesday, Perham, Pelican Rapids, and Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal, all tied for 1st with rounds of 205. Frazxee was 4th with a 213.

Huus was the medalist with a 42, with teammate Liz Sonnenberg in 3rd with a 45. Frazee’s Brittany Lormis was 5th overall (48), with her teammate Alexis Parson taking 6th (49).

In the 2nd nine, Pelican Rapids edged Perham by 1-stroke, helping them earn a season tie with the Jackets for the HOL team title. Pelian Rapids finished with a 204, followed by Perham’s 205. Frazee dropped back to 6th with a 231.

WCA’s Marissa Hayward earned medalist honors with a 43, with Huus taking 2nd with a 46. Frazee’s Becky Karash was 6th overall with a 48.

For the season, Perham and Pelican Rapids tied with 16 conference points. H/U-H was a close 3rd with 18, followed by Frazee in 4th with 38 points.

Behind Huus, Sonnenberg was 3rd overall in the conference with a 45.85 HOL scoring average. Frazee had 3 All-Conference golfers (top-15): Parsons was 10th with a 51.0 average, Karasch was 11th with a 51.71 average, and Lormis was 15th with a 52.86 average.

The Frazee and Perham girls will compete in the 8AA Sub-Section Tournament on Wednesday, May 28 at Wildflower G.C.

Perham boys take 2nd in HOL

The Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal boy’s golf team had the top-4 individual golfers, as they capped their season with the HOL Championship Tuesday at Wildflower G.C. The Nuggets shot a 316 to secure the title on Tuesday. Perham finished 2nd at Wildflower with a 334, and they finished 2nd overall in the conference.

Leading the way on Tuesday was Hawley’s Andrew Cook, who shot a 77. Perham’s Nick Bahls shot a 79 to finish 3rd individually.

For the season, H/U-H finished with 10 conference points, followed by Perham with 17. Barnesville and D-G-F tied for 3rd with 40 points. Individually, H/U-H had the top-4 golfers, led by Cody Cook’s 37.64 9-hole average in HOL events.

Perham’s Blake Kunza and Nick Bahls both had 40.36 scoring averages to round out the top-6 in he conference. Also earning All-Conference honors were (top-15): Eric Huus (40.71), Nate Bormann (41.29), Ben Nelson (41.64) and Colin Gorath (43.36).

Frazee’s Calvin Streeper also earned All-Conference honors with a 44.0 average (15th). The Hornets finished in 6th place for the season in the HOL.

Both Perham and Frazee will compete in the 8AA Sub-Section Tournament on Wednesday, May 28 at Headwaters G.C. in Park Rapids.

Perham girls have pair of individual champs as they win 1 of 2

The Perham girl’s golf team will head into the HOL Championships next week at Wildflower G.C. with a slight edge over Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal and Pelican Rapids, after the Lady Jackets won 1 of the 2 events that were contested on Thursday. Perham did come out with a pair of individual champions.

The HOL girls started their day at Birchwood G.C. in Pelican Rapids. Hawley/U-H took team honors with a 189, 3-strokes ahead of Perham’s 192. Frazee finished 6th with a 224.

Becca Huus was the individual medalist, shooting a 38, 4 shots ahead of the runner-up, Olivia Rasmussen of H/U-H. Perham’s Liz Sonnenberg finished 4th with a 44.

Frazee was led by Alexa Parsons, who shot a 52. Maddisan Parsons was next with a 53.

In the 2nd round of the day at Hawley G.C., Sonnenberg had a career-low 40, as she earned her 1st medalist honor. Pelican Rapids’ Alexa Bekkerus won a scorecard playoff with Huus to finish 2nd with a 42.

Becky Karasch led the Hornets with a 50, followed by Alexis Parsons with a 52.

Perham took the team title with a 189. H/U-H was next with a 197, followed by Pelican Rapids (200) and Frazee (216).

Perham will enter the 18-hole championship on May 20 at Wildflower with 10 conference points. H/U-H is next with 12, followed by Pelican Rapids with 13 and Frazee with 24.

Conference point values are the same as the team’s finish in each HOL meet. A 1st place team score earns 1 team point, and so on. The HOL Championship is played as 2, 9-hole events for the girls scoring system.

Perham girls win on section course

The Perham girl’s golf team competed at Longbow G.C. in Walker on Thursday, the site of the Section 8AA Meet in about a month. The Lady Jackets won the section tune-up with a round of 402. Pelican Rapids finished in 2nd place with a 419, followed by Hawley/U-H in 3rd with a 423.

The Vikings Alexa Bekkerus was the medalist, with a round of 80. Perham’s Becca Huus was 2nd with an 81, followed by Liz Sonnenbrg in 3rd with a 93.

HOL Conference play will continue on Monday, May 12 at Ponderosa G.C., hosted by D-G-F.

Jacket boys edge H/U-H in HOL at Breckenridge

The Yellowjacket boys golf team finally edged HOL Conference leaders, Hawley/U-H on Thursday, as Perham won the HOL meet at Breckenridge. The Jackets finished with a 166, 1-stroke ahead of Hawley/U-H (167).

Nick Carpenter of H/U-H was the medalist with a 38. Perham’s Eric Huus was 1 of 3 golfers to shoot a 41. He won the scorecard playoff to take 2nd place. Blake Kunza shot a 41 and finished 4th, with Ben Nelson taking 6th with a 42.

Frazee finished in 6th place with a 195. Calvin Streeper led the Hornets with a 42. Dustin Parsons carded a 47, with Isaac Schermerhorn shooting a 49.

The Nuggets have 8 conference points, with Perham in 2nd place with 13. Barnesville is a distant 3rd in the standings with 30 points, followed by Frazee in 4th with 32. The HOL boys will play at The Meadows G.C. on Monday, May 12.

Hawley edges Perham in pair of HOL boys golf contests

The boy’s golfers from the HOL Conference put in a doubleheader on Monday, playing 9 holes at Willow Creek G.C. in Barnesville before heading to Frazee G.C. for another 9 holes.

In the early contest at Willow Creek, Hawley/U-H won the team title with a score of 154, 5-strokes ahead of Peham at 159. The host Trojans were a distant 3rd with a 183.

The Nuggets had 3 golfers in the top-6, led by medalist Nick Carpenter’s 36.

Perham’s Blake Kunza finished 3rd overall with a 38, with Ben Nelson finishing 5th with a 39. Frazee was led by Calvin Streeper with a 42.

In the twilight round at Frazee G.C., Hawley edged Perham by 1-stroke. The Nuggets had a 153, led by Andrew Cook’s 1st place round of 34. Perham had a 154, with Nick Bahls finishing 2nd overall with a 37. Nelson was 3rd overall with a 37, with Nate Bormann finishing 6th with a 39.

Streeper had a 43 to lead the Hornets on their home course. Isaac Schermerhorn shot a 44.

The HOL boys will play at Bois De Sioux G.C. in Breckenridge on May 8.

Huus leads Perham girls with pair of HOL golf wins

Perham’s Becca Huus had a big day Monday as the HOL girls played a pair of 9-hole rounds.

In the morning meet at Tipsinah Mounds G.C., Huus fired a 36 to earn medalist honors as Perham edged Hawley/U-H for team honors. The Lady Jackets finished with a 187, with Hawley shooting a 188. Pelican Rapids was 3rd (191), followed by Frazee in 4th (193).

The Hornets were led by Maddisan Parsons and Brittany Lormis, who both shot 47’s.

In the afternoon meet at Bois De Sioux G.C. in Breckenridge, the scores were a little higher, but Perham still came out on top with a 210, as Huus once again earned medalist honors. Huus won a scorecard playoff over Alexa Bekkerus of Pelican Rapids and Annie Dohman of Breckenridge. All 3 golfers shot 46’s.

Perham’s Liz Sonnenberg finished 4th with a 47. Alexis Parsons led Frazee with a 49.

Frazee, Pelican Rapids and Hawley/U-H all tied for 2nd with team scores of 213.

The HOL girls will play at Lakeside G.C> in Perham on May 6.

Perham girls golf at Whitetail Run

The Yellowjacket girls golf team had a non-conference meet at Whitetail Run G.C. in Wadena on Thursday. Pequot Lakes came out on top of the 10-team event wit ha round of 350. The Yellowjackets finished 7th with a 418.

The meet medalist was Bemidji’s Morgan Wiliams, who had an 18-hole score of 77. Perham’s Becca Huus was 6th overall with an 89.

The Perham girls will return to HOL action on Monday, May 5 at Bois De Sioux G.C. in Breckenridge.

Perham boys host HOL at Lakeside GC

The Perham boys golf team hosted the Heart O’ Lakes Conference teams at Lakeside G.C. on Thursday, May 1. Hawley/U-H held on to their conference lead with a 1st place team round of 313. The Yellowjackets were 2nd with a 341, with D-G-F a distant 3rd in 376, followed by Frazee in 4th with a 388.

Hawley’s Willy Tickel was the low scorer for the round with a 76. He was one of 4 Hawley golfers in the top-6.

Perham was led by Eric Huus, who finished 5th with an 82. Nick Bahls was 6th with an 83. Frazee’s low scorer was Dustin Parsons, who shot an 89.

The Jackets will compete in the 36-hole invitational at Pebble Lake G.C. in Fergus Falls, May 2-3.
