Jacket boys advance 8AA golf final; Streeper moves on for Hornets

The Yellowjackets golfers will advance to the Section 8AA Championship, after a 3rd place finish in the Sub-Section Meet at Headwaters G.C. in Park Rapids on Wednesday.

Detroit Lakes won the sub-section title, with a team score of 304, 20 strokes ahead of the defending 8AA champs, Fergus Falls (324).  Pelham finished 3rd with a 328, followed by Frazee with a 381.

The top-3 teams, and the top-6 individuals not on an advancing team, move on to the Section 8AA Championship Meet, which will be Monday, June 1 at Longbow G.C. in Walker.

The top-2 teams had the top-4 individuals at the sub-section meet, with D.L.’s Ben Mallow and Fergus Falls’ Chris Swenson tying for the low rounds with 74’s.  

Blake Kunza finished 5th overall with a 76 to lead the Jackets.  Nate Bormann was the next Perham golfer with an 82, followed by Eric Huus with an 83.

Frazee will have 1 golfer advance, as Calvin Streeper shot a 90, to finish in a 3-way tie for the 2nd best score among golfers on non-advancing teams.  Dustin Parsons just missed a chance to advance by finishing with a round of 95.

Perham girl's finish 2nd at sub-section meet; Parsons advances for Frazee

The 3-time defending Class AA State Champs made their 1st step towards a 4-peat, as the Detroit Lakes girl’s won the 8AA Sub-Section Meet at Wildflower G.C. on Wednesday.  The Lady Lakers shot a 318, well ahead of the runner-up’s, Perham (364), and the 3rd place team, Pelican Rapids (417).  

The top-3 teams, and the top-6 individuals not on an advancing team, move on to the Section 8AA Championship Meet, which will be Monday, June 1 at Longbow G.C. in Walker.

The top individual at Wildflower on Wednesday was D.L.’s defending State champ, Katie Smith, who shot a 70. The individual runner-up was Alexa Bekkerus

Perham was led by Becca Huus, who finished 4th overall with an 81.  Lizzy Sonnenberg shot an 89 for the Lady Jackets.

The Frazee girl’s finished 8th overall with a 461, but Maddison Parsons will advance to the Section finals, as she was the final individual qualifier with her round of 99.

Perham girl's win 3rd straight HOL title behind Huus' individual crown

The Perham girl’s secured their 3rd straight Heart O’ Lakes Conference title on Thursday at Wildflower G.C., winning both sides of the pair of 9-hole contests that determined the 2015 season championship.  It’s the 4th championship for the Jackets in the last 5 seasons.

The Jackets scored a 185 on the front-9, to beat Hawley by 8 strokes.  On the back-9, Perham shot a 193, 3 ahead of Hawley, to finish the season with 8 points, as they swept all the season’s conference meets.  Hawley was the team runner-up with 18 points, followed by Pelican Rapids.

Perham junior Becca Huus won her 2nd straight HOL Individual Crown, and the 5th straight for the Lady Jackets (Holly Karkela, 2011, and Rachel Nelson, 2012-13).  She had a 38.86 average in 9 HOL events, which was nearly 4 strokes better than the season runner-up, Alexa Bekkerus of Pelican Rapids (42.43).

Perham had 5 golfers finish with All-Conference honors (top-15 average for the season).  Sophomore Liz Sonnenberg finished 3rd overall in the conference with a 43.57 average.  Freshman Kolby Bormann was 9th (49.29), and 8th grader Ali King and freshman Alisha Rosen tied for 11th with 49.71 averages.

The Frazee girl’s finished 5th overall for the season, after taking 7th on the front-9, and 4th on the back-9, Thursday at Wildflower.  Sophomore Maddisan Parsons earned All-Conference honors, finishing 7th individually for the season with a 48.0 average.  She was the runner-up on the front-9 at the championship round with a 43.

Hawley boys wins 3rd straight HOL golf title, with Jackets and Hornets finishing 2-3

The Hawley Nuggets completed a dominant season where they won their 3rd straight Heart O’ Lakes Conference championship, and had the top-3 individual golfers.  It’s the same 3, in the same order, that finished atop the HOL last season.

The Nuggets shot a 320 at Wildflower G.C. on Thursday to secure the team title.  Perham, the season runner-up, finished 2nd in the championship finals with a 335.  The win gave Hawley a season total of 8 points, with Perham finishing with 12.  Frazee finished a distant 3rd for the season with 24 points.  

Willy Tickel and Cody Cook tied for medalist honors at Wildflower, with rounds of 73.  For the season, Cook won his 2nd straight title, with a 72.4 HOL scoring average.  The Nuggets Andrew Cook was 2nd for the season (74.6), followed by Tickel in 3rd (75.0).

Perham’s Blake Kunza finished 3rd at Wildflower on Thursday with an 81.  For the season, he finished 4th overall with an average of 75.4.  Yellowjackets golfers occupied 4 of the next 5 spots in the HOL’s individual standings.  Ben Nelson was 5th overall with a 76.8 average, followed by Eric Huus in 6th (78.8), Isaac Guck in 7th (80.0) and Nate Bormann in 9th (81.6).

The Hornets had a pair of All-Conference performers, led by Calvin Streeper, who was 13th for the season with a 85.80 average.  Isaac Schermerhorn, who led the team with an 87 at Wildflower, finished 15th overall for the season with an 89.4 average.

Sonnenberg leads Perham girls to win at Birchwood G.C.

The Yellowjacket girl’s had 3 golfers among the top-6, including medalist Liz Sonnenberg, as they won the HOL at Birchwood G.C. in Pelican Rapids on Tuesday. The Jackets finished 10 strokes ahead of runner-up Hawley, with a team round of 185.

Sonnenberg tied for the low round with a 42, and earned medalist honors on a scorecard playoff with Pelican Rapids’ Alexa Bekkerus. Bekkerus is in 2nd place overall individually in the HOL (41.6 HOL, 9-hole average), with Sonnenberg close behind in 3rd (43.0).

The HOL leader, Perham’s Becca Huus, was 4th overall Tuesday, with a 45. She has a 37.2 scoring average in the conference. Kolby Bormann was 5th overall with a 46.

Frazee’s leading golfer was Alexis Parsons with a 49, as the Hornets finished in 5th place with a 216.

The HOL Championships will be Thursday, May 21 at Wildflower G.C. The girl’s will play the 2 sides of Wildflower, the front-9 and the back-9, as a pair of 9-hole contests, to determine their team and individual champions.

Perham girls, Huus, extend leads in HOL

After a day of rain, the HOL girl’s golfers competed at Maple Hills G.C. Tuesday afternoon, in a meet hosted by D-G-F. Both the Perham girl’s, and their leading golfer, Becca Huus, solidified their lead on top of the conference with wins.

The Jackets shot a 168, a full 21 strokes better than the 2nd place team, Frazee (189).

Huus shot a 34, cruising to the individual title by 10 strokes. She has a 38.5 HOL scoring average, which is more than 4 strokes better than Pelican Rapids’ Alexa Bekkerus (43.0).

With her top-5 finish, shooting a 44 at Maple Hills, Perham’s Liz Sonnenberg is now 3rd overall in the HOL individual standings with a 44.8 average.

As a team, the Jackets have all but assured themselves another HOL title. They have an 8-point lead for the conference with 1 regular season event, and the 18-hole championship still to come.

The Frazee girl’s had one of their best days ever with their runner-up finish.

“Our top five golfers all had season best scores,” Hornet head coach Dave Conzemius said. The 189 score is believed to be the best in school history, Conzemius added.

Alexis Parsons led Frazee with a 45. Brittany Lormis was next with a 46.

The final regular season meet of the HOL schedule will be Thursday, May 14 at Birchwood G.C. in Pelican Rapids. The 18-hole HOL Championships will be Thursday, May 21 at Wildflower G.C.

Jacket boys finish 7th at 2-day Fargo North Invitational

The Perham boy’s golf team competed in tough conditions at Edgewood G.C. in Fargo last weekend at the Fargo North Invitational. Cold and windy weather met golfers from the 16 teams on both days of the 36-hole tournament.

Grand Forks Red River turned in the best score in the 1st day of the tournament, and ended up in a tie with Roseau, with 2-day totals of 636. Hawley finished in 4th place overall with a 652, putting in the low score for the 2nd day of the tournament with a 317.

Perham finished in 7th place overall with a 670. They shot a 338 on the 1st day, and a 332 their 2nd time through on Saturday.

The individual champion was Thomas Nelson of Wahpeton, who shot a 2-day total of 145, leading his team to a 6th place finish. He had the low round on Friday with a 72, and was tied for the low round on Saturday with a 73, along with the overall runner-up, Pat Traynor of Fargo-Shanley (150).

Eric Huus finished in 10th place overall for the Yellowjackets with a 161. His 2nd day round of 76 was the team’s best for the weekend. Nate Bormann and Blake Kunza both shot 2-day totals of 167.

Jacket girls make it 5-for-5 in HOL events
The Perham girl’s made it 5-for-5 in Heart O’ Lakes Conference golf events with an 18-stroke win at Willow Creek G.C. in Barnesville on Tuesday.  The Lady Jackets finished with a 175, with Hawley taking 2nd with a 193.  
Yellowjackets junior Becca Huus won her 4th conference event, shooting a 38.  Barnesville’s Hannah Reader was the runner-up with a 40, followed by Perham’s Liz Sonnenberg with a 41.
The Lady Jackets now have a 5-point lead over Hawley in the conference.  Pelican Rapids is in 3rd place, 10 points behind.

Perham and Hawley tie for big win at Frazee G.C.

Both the Perham and Hawley boy’s golfers took apart the Frazee G.C. on Monday, as the two team’s tied with rounds of 300, well ahead of the rest of their HOL counterparts.  Frazer finished in a distant 3rd place on their home course with a 360.

Hawley’s Drew Cook took top individual honors with a round 73.  Perham’s Ben Nelson and Blake Kunza tied for 2nd with 74’s, with both Nate Bormann and Isaac Guck shooting 76’s.

Calvin Streeper led the Hornets with an 85, followed by Brady Mickelson with a 90.

The tie allows Hawley to maintain a slight lead over the Jackets for the overall conference lead.

Perham will take the rest of the week off before competing in a 2-day, 36-hole event hosted by Fargo North.  Frazee will be back in action on Wednesday, May 6 at Longbow G.C. in Walker.

The HOL will return to action at Hawley G.C. on May 11.

Perham girls extend HOL lead with win at Breckenridge

The Perham girl’s expanded their overall lead in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference by outscoring the field by 15 strokes Monday at Bois De Sioux G.C. in Breckenridge.  

The Lady Jackets were led by Becca Huus, who shot a 1-over par 37 to take individual medalist honors.  Teammate Liz Sonnenberg was 3rd overall with a 43.  The runner-up was Alexa Bekkerus from Pelican Rapids with a 42.

Hawley was a distant 2nd as a team with a 193.  The Frazee girl’s finshed in a tie for 6th place with Breckenridge with a 228.  The Hornets were led by Alexis Parsons and Brittany Lormis, who both shot 53's.

The Lady Jackets now have a 4-point lead in the HOL over Hawley, and an 8-point lead over 3rd place Pelican Rapids.

The HOL girl’s will return to action Tuesday, May 5 at Willow Creek G.C. in Barnesville.
